Celtic Please The Neutrals, Sicken The Sevconians And Disappoint The Hacks!

What a game! What a team! What a manager! What a day!! Celtic travelled to Motherwell with high hopes of maintaining their unbeaten league record and found themselves 2-0 down to Mark McGhee's spirited side before the ref could blow the half time whistle. Neutrals smirked, Sevconians suddenly only had one free hand and the twisted hacks who populate the SMSM were demanding the graphic of a broken Celtic crest for their next article. Even some Celtic fans resigned themselves to the unbeaten run coming to an end. After all you can't win them all can you?

Brendan Rodgers got his sloppy stars in for the halftime team talk and whatever he said had the effect of lighting a fire under the squad. Players hassled and looked sharper as the second half got underway and as a fan watching the events unfold you sensed something was in the air. Within a few minutes Celtic had pulled a goal back through Callum McGregor, a lovely one two with Stuart Armstrong ended in the ball nestling in the corner of the net with Craig Samson left helpless in the Motherwell goal. With the score at 2-1 it was easy to imagine the neutrals thinking "Game On" the sevconians shifting nervously and the hacks slamming their keyboards in disgust. Celtic fans dared to dream the game wasn't over and that their heroes could bag an equaliser.

As the game reached the 70th minute, Stuart Armstrong reached the byline and fired a lovely looped cross to the back post where Patrick Roberts was waiting to head it down into the net. Stuart's second assist wasn't to be his final act in an all action performance. We dared to believe we could win it now, how many of us have told our young fans about our magnificent reputation for coming back from the dead in matches. After the departure of Gordon Strachan however, those moments have sadly been few and far between. Celtic fans sat back and prepared for the inevitable third goal and when it did come it was the Motherwell fans who were celebrating. Motherwell substitute Lionel Ainsworth ghosted in unmarked at the back post and cushioned a volley past Craig Gordon who was left with no chance. At 3-2 our hearts sank. Anyone not on our side sensed the game was over and the celebrations began. They needn't have bothered, Celtic might yet lose their first domestic game of the season... But it wouldn't be today.

Almost instantaneously after the restart Stuart Armstrong was fed by Roberts and the Celtic man of the match swiveled to drive a daisy cutter past Samson to restore parity. 3-3 and now reality was dawning on everyone that the Hoops were about to complete a famous comeback, one that would rival any of the famous examples from our unbroken history. As the clock ticked down to full time Tom Rogic picked up the ball in the final third and danced forward before flashing a brilliantly curled right footed searcher into the far corner of the net. Fans and players went wild, even BR joined in from the sidelines and in that moment the Celtic family was re-united as one. All the heartache of the Deila years were swept away as the support finally had it confirmed that this was a REAL Celtic team. For the dark side's fans came the realization that we are indeed a force to be reckoned with and every bitter hack in the country would have to re-write their hatchet job... If Jim Traynor was OK with it obviously.

Fair play to Motherwell who played their part in what will probably be remembered as the game of the season. Only the classless Mark McGhee ruined what should have been a day to speak of football with some odd comments about the Celtic backroom staff. It won't detract from the magnificent game it was though and there is something comforting about knowing that for a brief period today our enemies were sitting smug thinking the bubble had burst. Thankyou Celtic for giving us such a wonderful day. Brendan Rodgers has taken this team to a new level. They have Level 5 PR, we have Level 5 BR.

Hail Hail

  1. Great article - almost perfect, except WGS was the "come back king" or at least the late goal specialist not the majestic MoN.
Amazing game though - proved what all of us were hoping - that BR has a plan B, and a C&D if necessary.
    Top class!
